Embedded Computer Hardware Overview

A microprocessor is an embedded computer processor with a built-in memory unit that communicates with input and output peripherals. An embedded system is usually a microprocessor-based computer system that integrates a central processing unit (CPU) with a discrete memory and input and output peripherals. Although this technology is quite new, embedded systems are now being used in a wide variety of applications, from personal computers to medical equipment to digital signage. Due to the fact that these types of systems are generally very affordable, they are becoming an increasingly popular choice for small, low-cost computing solutions.

There are several different manufacturers of embedded computers. These companies are able to leverage their existing manufacturing resources to produce cost-effective, high-quality computers using standard PC architecture and software. Because they leverage their existing design expertise, companies like ST Micro and Mentor Graphics can create chips that are exceptionally well-designed and optimized for specific application needs. Companies can build and sell systems using the x86 instruction set, which has become a mainstay of most embedded systems. They are able to take advantage of their experience in designing and selling personal computers to the customer in order to bring their unique architecture and technology into the product development process.

Another way that companies leverage their technology is by leveraging the company's experience in embedded software development. The embedded computer industry is characterized by several different software development teams. Some teams focus on product development while others specialize in embedded software development. The goal of any team is to make the best possible use of the technologies, hardware, and documentation that the company already possesses in order to provide the most cost-efficient and quality product.

Embedded computer devices are typically built as a part of larger devices. For example, an embedded computer device might be incorporated as part of a personal computer. The device might then contain a display or a keyboard and mouse. The device might also contain a memory card or some other type of storage device that is used to hold applications and data. A digital camera, radio, video camera, or other type of compact digital camera may also comprise an embedded computer device.

Embedded systems are typically manufactured on silicon based wafers rather than flash chips. As a result, they require less space than computer chips made using flash. However, standard computer motherboards that connect to embedded computers usually have additional connectors and connections that make them compatible with the silicon-based wafer based device. The motherboard is typically embedded within the case of the device and uses a PCI slot to communicate with the microprocessor and other components of the embedded system.

Embedded systems have enabled many companies to provide flexible, cost effective, high-performing consumer products that can be used in a variety of ways. Embedded devices have become part of many desktop and notebook computers as well as embedded systems that are used in automobiles. These devices provide a unique way for manufacturers to control cost while maintaining flexibility in the design of the final product. They are easy to manufacture because they do not need to have a circuit board like other consumer electronics products do. Their low cost has made them very popular with consumers.
